Open Position:  Accountant III – 52 weeks, 37.5 hours per week, AFSCME position

SUMMARY

With limited supervision, the Accountant III will perform financial and accounting functions for the school district in accordance with state school district accounting and reporting rules as well as fund accounting principles.

 

COMPENSATION

The compensation is outlined in the AFSCME Local 1630 Agreement:  ($20.09 to $27.96 per hour)

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Associate’s degree in accounting or equivalent or business certification from MSBO. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  3. 2 years of relevant experience required. 3-5 years of related experience, preferred
  4. Knowledge of Government Accounting preferred
  5. Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, and other computerized accounting systems.
  6. Excellent organizational and filing skills.
  7. Pass a physical examination, drug screen and background check (CHRI).
  8. Ability to adhere to district confidentiality policy.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Assist Director of Finance with preparation of fiscal year budgets and department budgets as assigned.
  2. Keep current with MISD data processing methods and different applications available to the district.
  3. Maintain general ledger chart of accounts according to the state accounting manual.
  4. Preparation of journal entries necessary to reflect activity correctly in the general ledger.
  5. Bank reconciliations, Reconcile interfund and other balance sheet accounts regularly
  6. Prepare and execute wire transfers, maintains bank deposits and cash receipt records.
  7. Preparation and execution of wire transfers between bank accounts and external parties.
  8. Track salaries of employees and run reports who are paid via grant funds (AS/400)
  9. Requests reimbursements for grant and other expenditures, Receive and file all fundraising forms.
  10. Accounting and maintenance of student activities accounts.
  11. Receipt and accounting for property taxes and State Aid
  12. Maintain fixed asset inventory and update fixed assets records.
  13. Preparation of year-end audit; Work with external auditors and supply requested information and data.
  14. Final expenditure reports, Monthly closing of books, year-end reporting, and FID (AS/400)
  15. Cross-trained with, and backup other accountants for Payroll function:
    1. Prepare payroll checks and direct deposit.
    2. Prepare timely quarterly reports and annual reports required by law.
    3. Maintain all employee deductions and prepare related disbursements.
    4. Prepare Payroll/MSPERS reconciliation for yearly audit.
    5. Keep current with union contracts and administrative contracts.
    6. Make sure fringe benefit policies comply with the respective contract provisions.
    7. Assist new employees with filling out fringe benefit packages. Initiate, maintain and terminate insurance with medical providers, per recommendation from the Personnel Office.
    8. Preparation and distribution of all checks.
    9. Prepare quarterly reports for unemployment, bureau of labor statistics and 941 spreadsheets
    10. Prepare check register for Finance Committee meetings.
    11. Monthly posting of fringe benefits
    12. Maintain all employee deductions and prepare related disbursements.
    13. Purchase Orders, maintaining accurate internal accounts, handling petty cash
    14. Analyzing and recording all time sheets and supplemental pays
    15. Other general clerical functions
  16. Other duties as assigned by Director of Business and Finance.
